ABSTRACT
This study investigated principals' motivational techniques and teachers' job commitment in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study included all the 28 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample size of 60 teachers was drawn using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a questionnaire titled "influence of principals’ motivational techniques on teachers’ level of job commitment questionnaire (PMTTLJCQ) developed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by two experts; reliability tested with Cronbac alpha, which yielded a reliability index of 0.87. For data analysis, simple percentage and mean ratings were used to answer the research questions. t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha significance level. The findings of the study revealed among others that teachers' involvement in decision making and strategic planning is the main technique used by principals in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The level of teachers' job commitment was found to be moderate in the same Local Government Area. The relationship between principals' motivational techniques and teachers' job commitment was found to be significant in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that teachers should be properly motivated by involving them in strategic decision making and planning in order to obtain maximum job commitment from them. It was also recommended that principals should be well versed with different trends in teachers motivation and facilitate in-service courses for their teachers.
