ABSTRACT

The study investigated principals’ leadership styles and teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, three research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and twenty four (124) respondents which include 20 secondary school principals and 104 teachers. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation. The findings from the study include that democratic, autocratic, transactional, transformative, charismatic, situational, bureaucratic leadership, participative and visionary leadership styles constitute some of the leadership styles that are commonly used among principals in public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that there is a significant influence of principal leadership style on teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study recommended among others that secondary school principals should often make more use of democratic leadership style as this will go a long way towards enhancing the level of teachers’ job performance.
