ABSTRACT

 The study examined major leadership styles and performance of teachers in secondary schools in the north-eastern part of Ovia Local Government Area of ​​Edo State. To achieve the aim of the study, four research questions were asked and answered.

201 teachers from 20 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo State participated in this study. The sample size of the study consisted of 70 teachers from 10 secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of ​​Edo State.

The results of the study show that leadership styles adopted by secondary school principals include democratic, autocratic, situational, transactional and transformational leadership styles. It was found that there is a significant relationship between the leadership styles of principals and the effectiveness of teachers in public secondary schools in Ovia State, North East of Edo State. The study recommended that high school principals often use a more democratic leadership style. This significantly improves the work performance of teachers. It has also been recommended that secondary school principals avoid the use of an autocratic leadership style.
