Abstract
This study was designed to determine the relationship between leadership styles adopted by principals and job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Five research questions were raised and answered in order to achieve the purpose intended for the study.
The study adopted descriptive survey research design with a population of two thousand five hundred (2,500) teachers in secondary schools and a sample size of A total of two hundred and fifty (250) teachers selected from secondary schools. Data for the study was collected with the use of the questionnaire which was face and content validated while the test-retest reliability method was used to ascertain the reliability of the research Instrument. Frequency count, simple percentage and mean score analyses to analyze the collected data.
Findings from the study revealed that the predominant leadership styles practiced by secondary schools principals are democratic, transformative and Bureaucratic leadership styles, That the level of teachers’ Job Satisfaction in secondary schools is average, That though leadership style preferred by male and female principals in the area are very strict with administrative processes, there is really no difference in the leadership of and female principals, That there is a relationship between principals’ leadership styles and teachers’ job satisfaction in secondary schools, That there is no relationship between principals’ gender and leadership style and job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schools in the area. Based on the findings and conclusion reached, it was recommended that school principals should be encouraged to adopt leadership styles that help improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning process, efforts should be made by school principals to ensure that the totality of the work environment is conducive enough to enhance the job satisfaction of teachers, emphasis should be placed on competence of the individual to be appointed and not on the gender, School principals’ should be able to understand that their leadership style affects the outcome of teaching and learning and so make efforts to take decisions and actions that would be in the best interest of their schools, principals regardless of their gender, should work towards improving the quality of teaching and learning as well as the general welfare of the teachers in their schools.
