Primary Mathematics Curriculum and Methods is a guide to an activity based approach in mathematics teaching methods for both pre-service and in-service teachers. This book is particularly written for Primary Education Studies (PES) students in Colleges of Education in Nigeria. Therefore, the book aims at providing pre-service teachers with sufficient knowledge of the primary school curriculum, skills, attitude and methods that will enable them teach mathematics as contained in the Lower and Middle Basic Mathematics Education curricula. The book contains twelve units. Unit one outlines the National Philosophy of Education, the National Educational goals, National goals of Primary Education, the National Objectives of teaching Mathematics in primary school and the National goals of primary mathematics teachers education. Unit two presents teaching of numbers and numerals while unit three emphasizes the importance of place-value in numeration. Units four and five are concerned with the four basic operations. Units six and seven are on teaching fractions, decimals and percentages. Unit eight focuses on the general strategies and methods of teaching primary mathematics. Unit nine is on the development of curriculum, scheme of work, unit plan and the daily lesson plan. Unit ten is concerned with the development, improvisation and utilization of instructional materials in teaching mathematics. Unit eleven is specially on the place of mathematical laboratory and teaching of geometrical shapes. The final unit outlines the methods of teaching standard measures; length, volume and capacity, mass and weight, time and money.Review questions are provided at the end of each unit to help students test their knowledge and check their own progress on the basic skills presented up to that point.
