ABSTRACT

The problem of continuous inflation in price of egg over time is an issue that has raised much concern among the egg consuming populace mostly among the poor. This research was therefore undertaken to shed light on the price variation in egg between markets in Benin metropolis of Edo State, Nigeria. To achieve this, the specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the egg marketers, describe the price per tray of egg in the various markets, estimate price variation between markets and describe the cost of transportation between the markets in the study area. A two-stage sampling procedure involving a purposive method for the selected markets from the study area, this is followed by a simple random sampling technique for egg marketers in the study area. The primary data obtained from the sample of 89 marketers with the aid of a structured questionnaire were employed in the study area and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency counts, percentage and inferential statistics such as simple regression.
