ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to assess the prevention and control measures of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the undergraduate students of the University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to act as a guide to the study. A descriptive survey research design was used in eliciting response from the respondents. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect data from a sample of 25 undergraduate students were selected as subject across 200 undergraduate student selected from Eight faculties in the University of Benin. An instrument titled ``Prevention and Control Of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIS) Among The Undergraduate Students Of The University Of Benin. The collected data was analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count.
In the findings, majority of the respondents agreed that they abstain from sex, large majority of the respondents think that abstinence is the only way to prevent and control STIs It was also noted that that use of condom during sexual intercourse prevent transmission of STIs, condom offers complete and absolute protection against STIs, majority of the respondents used condom the last time they had sex, majority of them feel that use of condom during anal sex is not necessary, and majority of the respondents of this study would encourage someone to use condom during sexual intercourse.
In line with the findings the following recommendation were made; School psychologists and counselors should organize group guidance program for caregivers and adolescents in school system, churches and recreational center with the aim of educating young people about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The content of the program should be ways to reduce the risk of STIs.
Government should introduce program to reduce poverty at individual family as well as community levels such program should include home base care for people with HIV/AIDS, foster care for AIDS orphans, food program for the children and support for educational experience.
