ABSTRACT

Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan parasite - Plasmodium. It is one of the most severe global health problems worldwide, particularly in Africa, where Nigeria is among the countries with the highest number of malaria cases, especially among children and teenagers. This retrospective study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of malaria among children aged 0-12 and teenagers aged 13-19 in University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, between January and June 2023. In this study, patients’ identification records were not used and there was no contact with the patients, only secondary data collection was carried out. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Scientific Solution (SPSS) software version 17.0 for descriptive analysis. The Chi square test was used to test for associations. The level of significance was set as (p<0.05). The prevalence rate was found to be 9.45% (540) in children, 0.99% (56) in teenagers, 4.95% (272) in males, 5.50% (324) in females, 3.27% (178) in dry season and 7.04% (418) in wet season. The findings from this study showed that malaria infection is most prevalent in children. As a result, there is still a need of improving and rechecking the existing malaria prevention and control measures
