PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG ADULT RESIDENTS IN A COMMUNITY IN ONDO STATE

ABSTRACT

 Hypertension is a public heath challenge that has been increasing alarmingly in both low and high income countries. Despite being one of the most common risk factor of cardiovascular disease, there’s a dearth of data available in rural part of Nigeria. The principal aim of this study is to determine the prevalence rate of hypertension and its associated factors among adult residents in Imoru community. A descriptive cross sectional design was used for this study and a sample size of 316 participants was obtained using Yamane's formula. A well-structured questionnaire, blood pressure apparatus, weighing scale and calibrated meter rule was used to collect data. The result recorded a prevalence rate of 37.7%, sex of respondents showed that 177(56%) were males, while 139(44%) were females, their major occupation were 115(36.4) farming and 103(32.6) trading. Respondents had a low level of knowledge regarding hypertension and its risk factors, more than half of respondents report that they always consume red meat. The respondents BMI (kg/m2) mean was 25.78±3.00. In this study there is no significant difference in prevalence of hypertension between male and female respondents in the community (p=0.801). In conclusion, this study assessed prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors among adults’ residents in Imoru community, Ose Local Government Area, Ondo state. The result showed that there was high prevalence of hypertension and low level of knowledge of hypertension and its associated factors.
