ABSTRACT
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among students. A hundred randomly selected blood samples were collected for study. The HIV test kit was used to determine the presence of the infection in the blood samples. An overall prevalence of 6.0% was observed among the one hundred students examined. The highest prevalence was observed among age 21-23 (50.0%) followed by 24 and above (33.3%). There was no significant statistical association in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in relation to sex and age group respectively. The females (59%) had higher prevalence rate than the males (41%). However, it is recommended that HIV testing be included in student's health clearance followed by public educational campaigns and standard counseling centers.
