ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school students in Edo state. In order to provide directions and sharpen the focus of the study three (3) research questions were raised and one (1) research hypotheses was formulated. The population of the study consist of 12,500 secondary school students in Ovia North East local government area of Edo State of which 200 students were randomly sampled from the total population.

          The instrument for the study is a questionnaire titled the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school students. The instrument used a four (4) point Likert rating scale for response to the various items and also provided an open ended response in which respondents were able to list the commonly used drugs in their schools. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s project supervisor and two other experts in the department of educational evaluation and counselling psychology. For the reliability of the instrument, it gave the coefficient of 0.812. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one sample t-test.

      Based on the analysis, the findings revealed that drug abuse is prevalent among secondary school students in Edo State. It also revealed that secondary school students in Edo State commonly use a variety of substances, with alcohol being the most frequently consumed. Tobacco is also widely used, indicating its accessibility among students. Additionally, marijuana is identified as a prevalent substance, raising concerns about its increasing usage. Based on these findings it was concluded that drug abuse is a widespread challenge among adolescents, requiring comprehensive intervention strategies that address all students regardless of the sex.
