ABSTRACT
Waterborne diseases caused by protozoan parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia pose significant health risks worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in water storage tanks, focusing on assessing the place of contamination,level contamination and identifying factors influencing it occurrence. A total of two hundred samples of water from ten Halls of residence storage tanks were examined for the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts. Water tanks close to the toilet, without water cover lids, proximity or frequent assessebilty of the tanks by students were employed to collect water samples from various storage water tanks across different Halls of Residence of the University of the Benin, Benin City. Microscopy methods such as Ziehl-Neelsen stain,iodine stain and Sedimentation technique were utilized for the detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts. Physical survey was used to collect data on the characteristics of water storage tanks in the various Hall of residence. The results from the study showed an overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts to be nine (45%). The prevalence Cryptosporidium oocysts was found to be eight (40 %), while that of Giardia cyst was (5%). The highest rate was recorded in Hall four (15 %) while Hall two (2) and Hall three (3) recorded same percentage of prevalence (10%). The other Hall of residence recorded no prevalence. this showed high statistical significance relationship (p<0.0001). The study had therefore confirm that Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cytes are contaminated waterborne diseases. hence the urgent need for the development of epidemiologically, base control strategy for the control (oo)cysts of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in water storage tanks in the various Hall of residence in University of Benin campus Ugbowo, Benin City
