ABSTRACT

Background: Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder recognized clinically by the onset of hypertension and proteinuria. It complicates about 2%-to 10% of pregnancies worldwide and contributes to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. It’s a complex condition that requires close monitoring and medical intervention to ensure the best possible outcomes for both the mother and the baby. Aim: A retrospective research was carried out to better understand the prevalence, medication use and outcomes of preeclampsia among women in the maternity unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin between January 2022 to December 2023. The three (3) specific objectives were to determine the prevalence of preeclampsia, the treatment regimen utilized in the management of preeclampsia and the outcome of preeclampsia among pregnant women in the maternity unit of UBTH. Methods: Data on pre-eclamptic patients were obtained and reviewed from the Records Department of the hospital. Data was extracted through the use of a checklist; no sampling technique was used. A total of 121 prescriptions met the inclusion criteria. Demographic and clinical characteristics, diagnosis, drug prescribed and their outcomes. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. The analysis was mainly descriptive. Pearson's chi-squared test was carried out to determine the association of patient characteristics with diagnosis. Statistical significance was accepted when the p-value was < 0.05. Results: The result revealed that the prevalence of preeclampsia from January 2022 to December 2023 was 2.8% vi Conclusions: Based on the findings, conclusions were made that regular training workshops and seminars for midwives, medical practitioners, and other relevant health workers on preeclampsia and the current advances in its management will go a long way to rescue patients during the crisis.
