ABSTRACT
The study examined on the perceptions of female mass communication students in Edo state towards investigative journalism female mass communication students in Edo state. Survey method was adopted and the instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. Using the Taro yameni formula, 342 female undergraduate were sampled from the population of 2520 from four selected institutions of University of Benin, Ambrose Ali University, Auchi polytechnic and Benson Idahosa University during the cause of this survey. 342 questionnaires were distributed through these institutions and all 342 were retrieved. Data collected was analyzed in tables and simple percentages. Findings show that female mass communication students in Edo state do not necessarily have a negative perception towards investigative Journalism, although cultural practices in Edo state and also unfavorable working conditions would let them pick other areas of mass communication to venture into other than Investigative Journalism. Again, it is also noteworthy that females have found investigative Journalism suitable to do not minding the job hazards but discrimination and preferential treatments given to the male folks over them is very discouraging and often times affect the perception they have towards investigative journalism. The researcher concluded that that media houses should make it as a point of duty to employ of the female investigative journalists just like they employ the male journalists, and our cultural practices should further be re oriented acknowledging the fact that as long as a female is capable for the job she should be given the opportunity to do the job so at the end of the day our standards for careers that we choose will be based in the merits of our actions put together and not just what the world thinks is right or not. It should also be noted that compared to other studies carried out on this same field of knowledge females are getting more enlightenment and are ready to work on the field of investigative Journalism if proper measures are taken in that field of study and career.
