ABSTRACT
Furfural is a liquid chemical that is sourced from renewable resources. It is created from the hemifurfural schiff base components (pentosans) of vegetable matter. It is also the only compound of the furan series being directly obtained from biomass (e.g. bagasse) at industrial scale.
Furfural was syntensized by distillation at a temperature of 160 - 163°C from sugarcane bagasse. Test for pH, colour and solubility was carried out on the syntensized furfural. The furfural was used to prepare furfural Schiff Base by condensation reaction between a primary amine and carbonyl compound, The Schiff base is synonymous with an azomethine. The fourier transform infared spectroscopy analysis was then carried out on the syntensized furfural Schiff Base which identified the chemical bond in a molecule by producing an infared spectrum absorption spectrum. The spectral gave a profile of the sample for many different components.
The X-Ray diffraction analysis was also carried out on the syntensized furfural Schiff Base which which analysed the structure of the Schiff Base which also revealed the chemical compositions.
