PREPARATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF A HEXANE BASED ADHESIVE FROM NATURAL RUBBER

ABSTRACT

Natural rubber has been undergoing modifications for various applications of which adhesives is one of them. Processed natural rubber crump was collected, cut into smaller pieces, masticated and agitated for about 30 minutes at room temperature, the masticated natural rubber was then dissolved in hexane in order to convert it to liquid natural rubber LNR ,it was then left for six hours after which other components for the formulation were added and the whole solution stirred by mechanical action for proper mixing. Physiochemical parameters were obtained by various methods. The results obtained from the analysis were pH  range (6.5-9.5)   flash point (270±0.50) density at 25oC (0.40±0.50) ash content (0.82±0.20) the drying times for air dry was 8seconds,touch dry time was 1minute 20 seconds, hard dry time was within 6hours and the viscosity at 25oC using a rotor  speed of 100rpm was 817cp.

The test for the adhesion ability of the adhesive shows that it is a good bond for substrates like paper to paper, paper to wood and wood to wood sandwiches. Hence, it could be useful for domestic, office and industrial applications.
