ABSTRACT
Several research have been conducted to determine and prove the antioxidant and antimicrobial effect and interaction between various mushroom extracts on pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical and antimicrobial effect of Ganoderma mushroom extract on selected pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Approximately 200 g of dried and powdered samples were extracted using 2000 ml of distilled water via boiling for two different time duration: 1 hour (Sample A) and 3 hours (Sample B) using standard procedure. The antioxidant and phytochemical activity and the HPLC profile of the extracts were determined. The antimicrobial effect of the extracts was also determined on five (5) test isolates (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Enterobacter fecalis) and one (1) yeast (Candida albicans) gotten from University of Benin Teaching Hospital (Microbiology Laboratory), Benin City, Edo State.
