ABSTRACT

Tomatoes are members of Solanaceae flowering family which include pepper, potatoes, and eggplants. Nightshade is the common name of this plant family. There are about 3,000 varieties of eggplant, many of which have high economic value. There are about 7,000 varieties of tomato, but in most cases the variety itself is S. Tomato solanum var. Solanum pimpinellifolium is a relative of the wild tomato found in western South America. Lycopene is a beautiful red carotene found in tomatoes and other red soil products such as red carrots, watermelons, grapefruits and papaya (from Latin pine, tomato). In this work, preliminary evaluation of lycopene from tomato was carried out. According to the results obtained, there were variability in the Lycopene content of the three varieties used; thus making the varieties candidates for breeding programme in tomatoes.
