ABSTRACT
This study brings to limelight the fact that Warri pidgin is indisputably the most efficient means of inter-ethnic communication among the densely populated and culturally and linguistically heterogeneous people of Warri. The language is currently undergoing a process of social expansion as a result of its dynamic social- cultural relevance and increased communicative demands, thus consistently expanding its lexicon and widening the rage of the application of the meanings of its lexical items.
This research tends to focus on metaphors and shows that the focus of metaphor is not in language at all, but in the way we conceptualize mental domain in terms of another. This research shows the metaphorical expressions of the Warri pidgin and sees metaphorical expressions as linguistic expression (a word, phrase or sentence) that is this surface realization of such a Cros-domain mapping. The objectives of this work is to determine how everyday Warri pidgin is expressed metaphorically. It focuses on the structure of Warri pidgin, the idioms in Warri pidgin and how the structure and idioms are used metaphorically.
The study discovers that the meaning of lexical items in Warri pidgin may be achieved through creativity or expressiveness and may be independent or the original meaning in the source language. This research also recommends the standardization of Nigeria pidgin to enhance its propagation of knowledge and maximize its communicative potentials as a language of wider communication in Nigeria.
