This long essay has discussed the portrayal of women in five selected stories in Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s Echoes in the Mind, to show the determination and resilience of women to survive subjugation by men and also the resistance of these women against such subjugation in typical African society. The portrayal of these women showcases their strength in the society. These stories in Akachi show the determination of women to contribute to the growth of the society. Their determination, resilience, and resistance to their reduction to a second-class status by their patriarchal norms is commendable. The novelist artistically presents her short stories, in an interesting manner so that the reader remains glued till the end of the story. Through her female characters in “Agarachaa Must Come Home”, “The Missing Hammer-Head” and “Inspiration Bug”, she shows how women are subjected and reduced to second-class citizens by men and how the former endure and fight their way through. The author shows the strength of women during hardships and how they handle such stress with passion and commitment. The women prove useful in the spheres they are made to handle.
