POPULATION EXPLOSION AND ITS EFFECT ON INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study Examined “population Explosion and its Effects on Infrastructural Facilities in Benin city. The main purpose of this study is to find out the effect of population explosion on access to Health Infrastructures in Benin city, Educational Infrastructures in Benin city, Electricity distribution in Benin city, and Traffic congestion in Benin city. Four research questions were raised. The research design for the study was the descriptive survey design, and the population of the study comprised 250 residents in Benin city. However, the population was evenly stratified among Three major areas in the Benin city namely, Ekosodin, Oluku, and BDPA. The study adopts simple random sampling technique, the research instrument was a semi-structured questionnaire having both opened and closed ended questions. The data collected from the 250 respondents were presented, analyzed and discussed. The research questions were answered with the use of frequency counts and mean ratings. The finding reveals that there is a nexus between population explosion and infrastructural inadequacies in Benin City, as the growth in one of the variable has a systemic ways of changing the other. However, it was recommended that there should be a check on the rate of increase in population that is leading to population explosion as when there are not commensurate with availability of infrastructure, there could be a ripple effect on it potency on the long run. There should be a re-orientation on controlled birthing as this check will limit the obnoxious idea, that children are assets for exploitation and create a notion that they are the responsibility of parent especially in this tight economy.

There should be provision of new infrastructure and renovation of existing one as this is to ensure that the citizenry are well catered for and they enjoy the presence and availability of basic in-infrastructur
