ABSTRACT

The study investigated the Impacts of Mother Tongue Interference in the study of English language in Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Four research questions were raised to act as a guide to the study. Several related literatures were reviewed in the course of the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was drawn from (5) public secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and a sample size of Two hundred (200) secondary school students were used for the study. The questionnaire was personally administered to the respondents by the researcher, information gathered from the questionnaire was analysed using the frequency count and percentage method. From the data obtained and analysed , it was revealed that Mother tongue interference has significant impact on the study of English language in Oredo LGA. This is because the mother tongue tends to affect their ability to express themselves proficiently in English language, Mixing of Mother tongue intonation and words in pronouncing second language words, differentiation in phonemes between the mother tongue and Target language, inadequate language facility in public schools, wrong teaching of the pronunciation of the target language and poor performance in English language. It was further discovered from the findings that mother tongue poses some problems in the study of English language such as problem of articulation of words in English language, misrepresentation of the English pronoun, substituting sounds in mother tongue for English sounds and decrease in student’s proficiency in English language. Moreso it was revealed that Teacher's competence enhances student learning of English language irrespective of Mother tongue interference. Finally, based on the findings, the researchers concluded and recommended thus: A contrastive analysis should be carried out regularly by both researchers and teachers to help L1 learners avoid errors. Language labs and adequate instructional materials that will help enhance the study of English language should be provided in our public schools and appropriately used. Teachers should go for refresher courses on pronunciation, elocution, Jolly phonics and phonetic knowledge so as to be able to help enhance the pronunciation skills of learners learning the target language. Moreso, Teachers should avoid using mother tongue to interact with students and must encourage the use of English language among learners. Government should through the ministry of education and various bodies deploy qualified and competent English language teachers who can teach English proficiently to our public secondary schools. English phonetics and speaking should be taught as a different subject in senior secondary Schools in Oredo and across the nation for a better articulation and comprehension of the target language.
