ABSTRACT
Political participation has gained worldwide recognition for its immeasurable importance in any democratic state. It has been viewed as a tool that promotes growth and encourages government responsiveness. It is also beneficial to citizens since it helps them become more civilized and responsible members of society. The role of rural dwellers engagement in the political affairs of Nigeria has continuously decline. The reason is attributed to thuggery, money politics, violence during Election, unfulfilled promises by political office holders. In understanding the level of political participation of Rural dwellers in Nigeria, Etsako West Local Governemnt Area was used as a case study. Using the survey research method, data were drawn from the study area Agbede and Jagbe.Findings reveal that, these rural dwellers know about the political happening around them but they are highly discouraged from participating due to lack of confidence in the government and other electoral incompetency. The study recommended that The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be more transparent and ensure a violent- free credible election whenever elections are being conducted across the country. It also recommended that Government should increase their involvement towards rural development through the creation of road, electricity, pipe borne water, schools, and improved medical facilities etc. When these amenities are provided, it would make the life of rural dwellers a lot easier, thereby, creating a positive attitude towards political activities.
