ABSTRACT

This research examined gender inequality and factors hindering women's political participation in Nigeria's democratic space. There is a need to address the existing gender disparities within the political system. The study aimed to identify the key challenges faced by women in accessing leadership positions and participating politically in Nigeria. It explored the factors contributing to gender inequality, such as restrictive cultural norms, limited access to education and resources, violence and intimidation, and patriarchal attitudes. Additionally, the research discussed the potential benefits of promoting political inclusiveness and gender equality, including improved governance, representation, and decisionmaking. The study utilized a survey research design, collecting quantitative data through questionnaires from a sample of 100 respondents in Oredo, Nigeria. Chisquare analysis was used to examine relationships between variables. Key findings revealed evidence of cultural, institutional and socioeconomic barriers limiting Nigerian women's engagement in politics. Respondents overwhelmingly agreed gender inequality undermines democratic legitimacy by excluding women's perspectives. Proposed interventions like gender quotas and leadership programs received strong support. By highlighting the importance of addressing gender inequality in Nigeria's politics, this study contributes to ongoing discourse on political inclusiveness. It advocates for dismantling obstacles to women's substantive participation, which is integral for strengthening democracy, social justice and sustainable development.
