ABSTRACT
The study explores the strategies of politeness in Esan language. Politeness is identified as a significant aspect within language, particularly in African societies where cultural elements heavily influence language functioning. The objective of the study is to examine the socio-linguistic expressions of politeness in the Esan language. The study looks into the conventions of politeness and how it fosters harmonious coexistence among individuals. The guiding maxims of politeness principles are discussed, along with the idea of politeness as a form of grace and behavior that categorizes individuals based on refinement and courtesy. The research focuses on specific linguistic features used by Esan speakers to convey politeness, including honorifics, greetings, requests, apologies, and expressions of gratitude. Additionally, the study explores the influence of cultural norms and social contexts, such as age, social status, gender, and kinship, on the choice and effectiveness of politeness strategies.
