ABSTRACT

This study examined play and its attendant benefit on children's skill development in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. The aim was to find out the benefits of play on children's reading and writing development. To achieve this aims, four research questions were raised. Descriptive research survey was adopted for this study The population of this study consisted of all the teachers in public and private schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State but a sample size of 100 was used. The Instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that play has a significant impact on children's skill development especially when teachers and guardians allow and support the child's play. It was discovered that play has a vital role in children's reading and writing development and using the proper play materials and games will benefit the child greatly. It was therefore recommended amongst others that teachers should employ play as a tool for teaching and learning in the classroom also the child be allowed to explore their environment and engage in play activities both in school and at home. Also play facilities and materials be provided to support and enhance children's learning and development.
