ABSTRACT
This issue has been more or less ignored. This issue has been looked at from the stand point of unlawful arrest and detention, callousness of law enforcement agents and racism. Dennis Brutus has also been discussed in terms of him being a human poet concerned with truth and the suffering of human, mostly African during the advert of the Europeans in South Africa. Brutus may be writing about socially and emotionally damaged human beings who find it impossible to survive in the contemporary world. But more importantly he is writing about the real world. The world has become a cruel and sometimes alien place to live. It is a time when only the very strong and healthy will survive. Vulgarity and deceit are triumphing in a world devoid of integrity. The poem speaker found no importance in things that never amounted to anything, the major theme of the freedom because of imprisonment, the poem speaker realized the importance of being able to move freely from one distance to another without barricades, the importance of being able to see whatever one wishes to see with at blockades and the importance of being independence.
