ABSTRACT

The phytochemical screening, proximate analysis, and mineral composition of the ethanolic extracts of Ficus sur leaves were carried out using standard methods. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, steroids, terpenoids, reducing sugars, and Anthraquinones were detected in moderate concentrations in the leaves whereas saponins were not detected in the leaves. Proximate analysis results showed a high carbohydrate content (36.45%) but low ash contents (2.98%) in leaves of Ficus sur. The mineral analyses of the leaves, respectively, showed a high concentration of potassium (120.5ppm), sodium (15.7ppm), and iron (10.2ppm) while iron (33.6ppm), sodium (20.1ppm), and potassium (17.8ppm) showed a high concentration in the soil. Soil chemistry analysis was also carried out such as pH analysis and electrical conductivity to know the significant presence of dissolved salts in the soil, potentially impacting the Ficus sur plant growth. The result for the pH was 6 indicating that the soil is slightly acidic while the electrical conductivity gave a value of 0.48ds/cm indicating an imbalance or excess salts. Ficus sur leaves contained good amounts of minerals, phytochemicals and also rich food content. It is therefore recommended and encouraged for consumption.
