ABSTRACT

Bryophyllum pinnatum (syn. Kalanchoe pinnata) is an indigenous and exotic plant used widely by the traditional practitioners for treating various ailments like renal calculi, hypertension, asthma, cold, abscesses, bleeding disorders and to facilitate the dropping of placenta during childbirth. Phytochemical and proximate analysis of leaves of Bryophyllum pinnatum (Never die) plant was analyzed using standard method. The qualitative phytochemical result showed that leaf sample contains alkaloids, tannins, saponin, terpenoid, glycoside, phenols, flavonoid were present in ethanol extract while eugenols and steroids was absent. Alkaloids, saponins and eugenols were present in aqueous extract while tannis, glycocides, steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids and steroids were absent in aqueous extract Proximate analysis revealed 93.36±0.20% moisture, 5.453±1.17% ash, 9.656±4.19% protein, 7.770±3.20% lipid, 9.596±7.58% fiber and 16.416±11.66% nitrogen free extract (NFE). The presence of these phytochemicals in the plant could be part of the contributing factors which suggest the use of the plant for various therapeutic applications. This also indicates that Bryophyllum pinnatum plant is a good source of human nutrition and should be included as dietary supplement.
