ABSTRACT

This research work was carried out to ascertain the phytochemical constituents present in Trichosanthes cucumerina plant using methanol extraction method, which showed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, saponins, eugenols, and tannins. The percentage yield of the plant extract was 5.76%. The acute toxicity property was also conducted in accordance with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidelines with no lethality recorded even at a dose of 5000mg/kg of the methanolic extract administered to the albino wistar rats used for the experiment. Also, the anti-oxidant activity of the plant was determined using the DPPH radical scavenging assay and was discovered to exhibit lower activity compared with ascorbic acid used as reference standard which had greater anti-oxidant properties.
