ABSTRACT
This research was designed to determine the phytochemical analysis, acute toxicity, and anti-depressant effect of the root extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria. The phytochemical analysis of Rauvolfia vomitoria was determined using standard methods. The result indicated that the root extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria is rich in tannins, phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides and alkaloids. The low mortality rate of 100mg/ml dose of Rauvolfia vomitoria after 14 days showed that the plant in not toxic. The anti-depressant study consisted of two tests FST (forced swim test) and TST (tail suspension test) the immobility was observed during the 5-minute interval after they were given doses of 25mg/kg, 50mg/kg and 100mg/kg of the root extract respectively. In this study, it is seen that Rauvolfia vomitoria has anti-depressant effect in low dose concentration which is 25mg/kg.
