ABSTRACT
Phytochemicals are naturally occurring compounds present in all plant parts which together with nutrients and fibers provide protection to plants and humans against diseases. Development of rapid and accurate methods of screening of medicinal plants for particular chemicals has aided phytochemical analysis enormously. In this study, fraction of Uraria picta in (n-hexane) was screened for qualitative determination of phytochemical constituents. The analysis showed the present of flavonoids, tannin, saponins, steroids, phenol, coumarins, alkaloids and anthocyanin. Quantitative analysis was also carried out on the fraction using hplc and the result showed Uraria picta contain kaempferol, steroids, proanthocyanidin, catechin, anthocyanin, narigenin, dihydrocytisine, cyanogenic glycoside, aphyllidine, ammodendrine, tannin, flavonones, cardiac glycoside, ribalinidine, phytate, spartein, oxalate, epihedrine, and sapogenin. The Hplc results show that n-heaxane of Uraria picta is high in Narigeni and has a lower concentration of Oxalate. At the end of the study it was observed that (n-hexane fraction) of Uraria picta contains phytochemical that are of medicinal benefit.
