ABSTRACT
Phytochemicals are secondary metabolites found in plants and they contain biological, medicinal and therapeutic properties. Andrographis paniculata is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Acanthaceae. The leaves and stem were isolated and extracted using ethanol, aqueous water, and carbonated drink (7up). These extracts were screened for phytochemicals and it was observed that alkaloids, saponins, tannins, steroids, anthraquinones, coumarins, phenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, and phlobatannins were present in various quantities. Quantitative estimation of total alkaloids and flavonoids in carbonated drink extract, phenols in ethanol extract and tannins in ethanol and carbonated drink extract were determined in the plant using standard method. GC-MS analysis was also carried out to identify the organic compounds present in the plant. The results showed that Andrographis paniculata contains active phytochemical compounds with antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties.
