ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to ascertain the phytochemical and proximate composition of the male Carica papaya root as the identification of the constituent of this sample using both aqueous and 70% ethanol extract would elucidate its therapeutic and nutritional roles. The aqueous and ethanolic extract of the male Carica papaya root was subjected to qualitative screening for several phytochemicals using standard procedures. The result indicated the presence of certain secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, saponin, terpenoids, eugenols, glycosides amd phenolic compounds. Proximate analysis revealed high moisture content (88.046%) and low percentage composition of proteins (4.561%), lipid (6.865%) and ash (3.635%). It was conclusive that the male papaya root had no real nutritional value but possessed high prospect in health benefits, as it may be useful in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases due to the presence of glycosides and may also help in the control of hyperglycemia and dyslipdemia as a result of its antioxidant properties contributed by the presence of phenolic compounds.
