ABSTRACT
Garcinia kola (bitter kola) is referred to as "wonder plant" because every part of it has been found to be of medicinal importance. It seeds, the most valued product of the tree, are commonly eaten to prevent/cure gastric disorders and for the typical astringent taste. The phytochemical analysis of garcinia kola using ethanol and aqueous showed alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, tannins, and eugenols to be present, flavonoids, steroids and phenolics were absent in both extracts. Though glycosides were present in the ethanol extract, they were not detected in the aqueous. The proximate analysis showed that the sample was high in carbohydrates (68.7%), a little amount of crude fibre (2.03%) and protein (3.02%), a negligible amount of ash content (1.04%) and a considerable amount of crude fat (25.84%) also a high amount of moisture content (50.23%) was shown. It has been shown through the phytochemical screening that Garcinia kola can be used as a good source of carbohydrate. The phytochemical composition also shows that Garcinia kola can be useful in pharmaceutical and medical sources.
