PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF BOOM LIME CORDIAL

ABSTRACT

Herbal medicine has been defined by the World Health Organization as complete label medicines
containing active constituent’s plants or other herbal materials or combinations in crude form, or
in plant preparations. This study was aimed at examining the antimicrobial potential and the
phytochemicals present in herbal products. Samples Boom lime cordial herbal drinks and Clara
bitters herbal drinks were obtained from Oba market in Benin City, Edo State. Following standard laboratory procedures, the antibacterial activities and phytochemicals constituents were
determined. The phytochemicals analyzed include Saponins, Flavonoids, Glycoside, Steroids, Tannins, Reducing sugars and Phenolic compound. Both herbal medicines contained Saponins, flavonoids, steroids, reducing sugars and phenols as phytochemicals. The antibacterial activity of Boom lime cordial on the tested organisms was as follows: Staphylococcus aureus (23 mm), Salmonella typhi. (15 mm), Escherichia coli (25 mm), Enterococcus sp. (22 mm) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (20 mm). While Clara bitters cleanser didn’t show any activity to all test isolates, as there were no zones of inhibition. Both herbal drinks were not effective against Shigella sp and Candida albicans. The results of this study showed that Boom lime cordial has good antibacterial potential as compared to Clara bitters cleanser which showed no activity to the test organisms.
