ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to evaluates the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical content and antimicrobial activities of methanolic and aqueous extract of Annonamuricata (soursop) leaf. The qualitative phytochemical screening reveals the presence of phenol, flavonoids, glycosides, saponnins,Anthraquinone, Tannins, Terpenoids for methanolic extract and the presence of phenol, flavonoids, steroids, Alkaloids, saponnins, Tannins, Terpenoids and , glycosides aquesous extract of Annonamuricata (soursop) leaf. The quantitative phytochemical screening reveals that the total phenolic content (1.97mgTAE/g), total saponnin content (0.30mcg/g) and total flavonoid content (3.08mgQE/g) for methanolic extract is higher than the total phenolic content (1.73mgTAE/g), total saponnin content (0.14mcg/g) and total flavonoid content is( 1.31mgQE/g) for aqueous extract. The antibacterial activity reveals that the zone of inhibition for the disc diffusion method using methanolic extract against Staphylococcus aureus (6.50±1.50) is higher thanaqueous extract against Staphylococcus aureus (5.50±0.50) and aqueous extract against Salmonella typhi (6.71±0.85) is higher than the methanolic extract against Salmonella typhi (5.50±0.50). The zone of inhibition the well diffusion method using methanolic extract against S.epidermis(22.25±2.39) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18.50±1.19) is higher than the aqueous extract against S.epidermis (14.50±0.65) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (15.00±0.41).The Antifungal activity reveals no zone inhibition using the methanolic and aqueous extract against penicillium and pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study has shown that the methanolic and aqueous extracts of Annonamuricata contains rich bioactive chemical constituents with significant antibacterial activity.
