ABSTRACT

The studied area is Igarra which lies between latitude 7° 17′ 0″N - 7° 19′ 0″N and longitude 6° 6′ 10″E - 6° 7′ 10″E and is situated at the northern part of Edo State, Nigeria. It is underlain by Upper Precambrian- Younger Metasediments which are in turn intruded by the Pan African Older Granites. Detailed geological mapping of the research area was carried out on a scale of 1:100,000 to update the previous information known about the Geology of the study area and a new geological map was produced to establish the relationship between different lithological units and their boundaries. Ten (10) fresh representative samples were obtained with the aim of determining their textural and mineralogical compositions using the method of petrographic analysis to classify the rock based on appearance, mineralogical composition and petrogenesis. The results obtained from petrographic modal composition of the rock samples from the area show that the rock is dominantly made up of minerals like quartz (26-29%), akali feldspar which is microcline (20-23%), plagioclase(30-34%), biotite (10-11%), muscovite (2-4%), hornblende(2-4%) and opaque minerals which are (0.7-0.8%). From the modal composition, the percentage of the three (03) most abundant minerals quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase were plotted on the QAP diagram, which classified the rock as a monzogranite. The granite is highly compacted and rich in many economic minerals that are at different stages of exploitation. At the time of this project work, the area was target for mineral/rock exploitation. Further geochemical analysis such as XRF and XRD is therefore needed to be carried out on this rock body to obtain more information about the chemical and mineralogical composition that will aid in the determination of the type of magma that gave rise to the formation of the rock.
