ABSTRACT

The research work is on Peter Obi and the socio-economic development in Anambra State, 2007 to 2015. The objectives of this study analyzed the state of socio-economic development in Anambra State before the coming of Governor Peter Obi; the socioeconomic development projects embarked upon by Governor Peter Obi; and the challenges that affected the socio-economic development in Anambra State in the era of Governor Peter Obi. The study will employ the qualitative methods in presenting and analyzing the data. However, historical method will be used to demonstrate the impact and level of effectiveness of the Governor Peter Obi’s socio economic development in Anambra state. The historical research design was used as the research design for the study. The research used the analytical method in analyzing its content and the data was gotten through the primary and secondary sources. From the findings, the study revealed that the state of socio-economic development in Anambra State before the coming of Governor Peter Obi was poor. Anambra State witnessed insignificant progress in various sectors with poor achievements in healthcare delivery, education, and infrastructure development. Similarly, the socio-economic development projects embarked upon by Governor Peter Obi tagged under the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) made tremendous impact on the polity, economy and social status of State with its ANIDS model. Lastly, the challenges that affected the socio-economic development in Anambra State under the administration of Governor Peter Obi, were that his prioritization of certain programs faced criticism from those advocating for different approaches. Governor Peter Obi's efforts to achieve socio-economic development were met with individual that were attached with endemic corruption within the state bureaucracy which posed a significant obstacle. The study concludes that Governor Peter Obi tenure was very fruitful in term of provision of the needed infrastructure under the ANIDS model which ensured that all socio-economic development projects and programmes were in line with the millennium development goals which lifted Anambra State to be one of the fastest growing states in Nigeria with massive progress in education, health and employment. The study recommends that the current government should adopt the Governor Peter Obi ANIDS model to ensure sustainability of his socioeconomic development in Anambra State.
