ABSTRACT

This study investigates the performance of National Health Insurance Scheme in Nigeria applying the panel ordinary least squares (PLS) technique using panel data from 2010 to 2021. NHIS performance (NPERF) is the dependent variable while Healthcare Accessibility (HA) Healthcare Quality (HQ), Government Support (GS) and Fund Allocation (FA) were proxies for National Health Insurance Scheme. Firstly, it was determined that the allocation of NHIS funds had a negative and insignificant impact on its performance in Nigeria. Secondly, accessibility to NHIS positively and significantly influenced its performance. Thirdly, the quality of healthcare services had a significant and negative effect on NHIS performance. Lastly, government support was found to have no significant impact on NHIS performance. The study recommends that Nigerian government should improve the fund allocation mechanisms to improve accessibility in order to reverse its negative influence on the performance of National Health Insurance Scheme in Nigeria.
