ABSTRACT
The study was to ascertain the possible use of packaged yam flour purchased from the market as an alternative and cost-effective laboratory media for the culture of Aspergillus niger. The packaged yam flour was used in this experiment using potato dextrose agar (PDA) as a control. The poured plates were grown using a pure culture of Aspergillus niger. The cultures were grown at room temperature for 96 hours, during which extension growth rates were taken. Their respective growths on the formulated media were compared with the extension growth rate on conventional media. Various extensions recorded in the formulated medium had no significant difference with that of the conventional mycological medium. Therefore, from the results of this experiment, Figure 1; A1, with the highest biomass, it was found that there is hope for using the formulated medium- yam flour extract dextrose agar (YFEDA) as suitable and cost-effective media for in-vitro growth of the test organism.
