ABSTRACT
The focus of the study was to investigate the approach or mechanism Nigeria Universities use to manage their performance. However, the specific objective of the study include the impact of mission, agency-based and stewardship-based performance management mechanism on Nigerian Universities, staff wellbeing, the wellbeing of the University, student wellbeing; mission and the quality of research output.
The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study consists of 165 Universities (Federal, State and Private) as at the year, 2018, which rose in 2019 to 170, comprising 43Federal Universities, 48 State Universities, and 79 privately- owned Universities. Considering the near impracticability of observing the entire population, and to give adequate coverage of the sample size of the study, Edo State was covered, in South-South geographical region involving: University of Benin, Ambrose Ali University, Benson Idahosa University, Well-Spring University, Edo University Iyamho, and Igbinedion University. A sample Size of 312 respondents was selected based on the large number of staff found in these public and private Universities. Proportional sampling techniques was used to divide equally among the universities for the study Questionnaire distributed across the respondents. The Cronbach’s Alpha was also used to determine the internal consistency based on true score variance of measurement scales. The data for the study was analysed using descriptive Statistics, correlation matrix and Structural Equation Model.
The result of the study reveals that; agency-based PMA has a positive and significant effect {0.2707, p=0.000} on staff well-being but this is not the case for stewardship-based PMA (0.0603, p= 0.344). In relation to student well being, both agency and stewardship PMA show very similar in their effects with agency PMA having coefficient and p-values of 0.329 (p=0.000) and stewardship PMA with 0.3263(p=0.000). In the case of institutional well-being, though agency and stewardship PMA have positive and significant effects, the magnitude of the estimated coefficients is larger for agency PMA (0.468) than for Stewardship PMA (0.3042). Consequently, the study recommends the need for university institutions in Nigeria to tilt more towards agency style of PM.
