ABSTRACT

This study was designed to assess students’ perception of the factors affecting their academic achievement in Chemistry in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. Five research questions were raised to guide this study. The research design employed for the study was the survey design. The sample consisted of 100 SSII Chemistry students drawn from the 5 sampled schools. The research instrument used for data collection was the Questionnaire titled: Students Perception of the Factors Affecting Academic Achievement in Chemistry (SPFAAC). The instrument was pilot tested and from the data collection, a reliability coefficient of 0.75 was obtained using the Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient. The validated instrument was administered to Chemistry students and the data obtained were analyzed using mean and simple percentages. The findings of the study revealed that teaching methods, instructional materials, laboratory facilities, home background and study habit significantly influences students’ academic achievement in Chemistry. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that government should provide adequate classroom environment for the teaching and learning of Chemistry.
