ABSTRACT

            This study was carried out to assess the perception of students in Institute of Health Technology, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, towards the effects of drug abuse on career of athletes. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study.

A descriptive survey research design was used for this study and simple random sampling technique was used to select fifty one (51) respondents who are undergraduate athletes in the study area. A structured questionnaire was used as the instrument of the study and a descriptive statistics using frequency and percentages was used in the data analysis.

It was revealed that athletes in the study area have good perception of the effects of drug abuse on the career of athletes. Penalties such as suspension / total ban from all sport activities and revoking of medals and titles are consequences of drug abuse on career of athletes. It is perceived that athletes engage in the practice of drug abuse with some drugs such as tramadol, codeine and tobacco. Further findings of the study revealed that factors such as performance enhancement, frustration from outcome of sport activities, stress and pains, are responsible for influencing drug abuse among athletes. Measures such as enforcement of policies and regulations against the practice of drug abuse, visitation to a therapist by addicted athletes as well as organizing health education programs for athletes, can help to address the practice of drug abuse among athletes in tertiary institutions.
