PERCEPTION OF STUDENTS OF THE CAUSES OF MATHEMATICS ANXIETY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the perception of students of the causes of mathematics anxiety among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. This study was guided by three research questions and two hypotheses The study employed the descriptive survey research design. Questionnaire having 20 items was constructed and administered in order to collect data. Data was analyzed using statistical measures and the two hypothesis were tested using the t-test statistical tool at 5% level of significance. The respondents for the study were 100 students from 5 schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The findings showed that abstractness in mathematics, students' negative experiences, teachers' attitude towards students among others are perceive by students as the causes of mathematics anxiety among secondary school students. A major recommendation of the study was that Teachers having positive and fair attitude towards students both in class and examination can improve students’ performance as well as reduce student’s anxiety toward mathematics.
