ABSTRACT

This research was undertaken to study the perception of socio-economic status of parents on the academic performance of students in basic technology in Edo state (a case study of University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School) The study started with chapter one, which establishes the background to which this study is based, four (4) purposes of the study were constructed by the researcher to guide the study, the purposes are to find out if parents income level, educational attainment, occupation and family size has effect on student's academic performance. Chapter two which is the literature review is divided into two parts the theoretical framework and the conceptual framework. Under the theoretical framework various theories were examined like the parental attachment theory, self-determination theory, Manslow's motivation theory. Under the conceptual framework, concepts like the family, family background, socio-economic status, factors that affects socio-economic status, parents and family, achievement, academic achievement and the factors that influence academic Under chapter three, the research design used was survey research design. The populations of this study were both the male and female junior secondary school students of the secondary schools in State. The population size is approximately Two Hundred students, the population representing JSS1 students, JSS2 students and JSS3 students of University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School Benin City Edo State. The sample technique used was random sampling techniques. A total number of 100 students was used and this was done by selecting 40 in JSS1, 30 in JSS2, 30 in JSS3 using a slip of paper. The instrument for data collection is a questionnaire designed along the four point Likert scale of Strongly Agree (SA) Agree (A), Disagree (D).
