PERCEPTION OF SMOKED DRIED AFRICAN CATFISH OBTAINED FROM FARM AND WILD SOURCES FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

SUMMARY

This study was conducted to ascertain consumer perception of farm raised fish compared to those from the wild in the Faculty of Agriculture University of Benin, Benin City. The result indicated that majority of respondents were male (51%), the largest age group was in the 40-49 years bracket (35.7%), most were single (52.9%), tertiary education was the most common educational background (68.6%), and Christianity was the dominant religious affiliation (93%). Additionally, the majority of households had 4-6 members (68.6%), civil servants was the most prevalent occupational groups (76%, respectively), and catfish consumption was high (81.4%) with a preference for pond-raised catfish (68.6%).

Regarding catfish consumption, a significant 81.4% of respondents consumed catfish, conversely, 18.6% of the total population stated that they did not consume catfish. The result showed 65.7% of respondents reported buying catfish a few times in a month and in terms of preferred sources for catfish purchase, local markets were the most common choice, with 60.0% of respondents. The result showed that 68.6% of respondents expressed preference for pond-raised catfish, while 31.4% preferred wild-caught catfish.
