ABSTRACT

The study investigated the perception of secondary school students on the choice of history education as a course of study in the higher instruction. The population for the study was 19,300 secondary school students from 13 public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used to select 150 students as respondents for the study. The instrument for data collection a structured questionnaire of (15) items on the perception of secondary school students towards history education, factors that influence the perception of secondary school students in choosing history education as a course of study and level of knowledge of secondary school students on the career opportunities open to historians and history education teachers. The reliability of the instrument was based on Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient test was 0.65. The data generated was analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics (tables and percentages).
