ABSTRACT

This study was designed to examine the perception of Mass Communication lecturers in University of Benin on traditional oath taking among public office holders in Nigeria in an attempt to achieve the objectives of the study, three hypotheses derived from the research questions were formulated and tested. The study adopted a quantitative (structured questionnaire) instrument in the collection of relevant data from a sample size of 9 respondents. The simple random sampling technique was adopted. The collected data were subjected to both descriptive (frequency count, table and percentages) and inferential statistical (Pearson product moment correlation) analysis. The analysis of data revealed the following findings: that it is high time public office holders started taking traditional oaths of offices; that traditional oath taking is more effective compare to the Christian or Muslim ones in curbing corruption; that traditional oath taking will promote good governance. Based on these findings, it was recommended that lawmakers should look into the issue of traditional oath taking among public office holders leading to good governance and promote it; that government should embark on programs that sensitize public office holders and the general public about the dangers of corruption: financial or otherwise.
