ABSTRACT
This study was designed to study the perception of English students towards news reading in Secondary Schools. The topic was built to propose news reading as a tool to improve the performance of English language in Secondary schools.
The research designed for this study was Descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 5 public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government. The respondents were selected through the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was the Yes or No close ended questionnaire validated by the researcher’s supervisor and it was analysed using the simple percentage procedure.
The findings of the study revealed students read/listen/watch news that suits their interest; therefore, News reading stands a chance of being inculcated in the activities of students to improve their performance in English language. It also showed that there low or no activities involving news reading in secondary schools. The study also revealed that secondary schools do not have any form of news media which could also serve as extra English language teaching aid along with textbooks and story books (short novels). Finally, it was recommended that news reading should be encourage in secondary schools to expose students to wider and more practical use of language. News content is a powerful English language enhancing tool to building effective communication skills among secondary school students.
